Active Schools – Physical Education
In our school we recognise that physical education provides children with learning opportunities through the medium of movement and contributes to their overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives. We aim to provide these learning opportunities to the children in our school to maximise active learning experiences and approaches to the benefit of each individual child. We seek to assist the children in our school in achieving their potential through the opportunities they receive to participate in activities drawn from the strands of the P.E. curriculum. We also seek to encourage children to lead active healthy lives by encouraging physical activity throughout our school.
New and updated PE equipment
As part of our active schools flag initiative the children have access to a wide range of PE equipment for use during break times. This is especially useful for our playground leaders as they organise activities for their peers.
The vast majority of PE equipment has been located just inside the front door beside the yard for this past school year. This is in keeping with the recommendation that equipment be easily accessible for teachers and pupils alike.
Each year our staff work together to strengthen our delivery of a different PE strand. This year, following discussion at staff meetings, our focus is on our delivery of the Gymnastics strand. Our staff pride themselves on their collaborative approach to teaching and so share ideas, activities and experiences of teaching the Gymnastics strand. This year our staff came together with an outside gymnastics coach to develop and enhance our resources for the Outdoor and Adventure Strand and our professional learning and development. We extended our resources e.g. mats and balls. The pupils completed a 6 week block of gymnastics. It was wonderful to have someone with such a depth of expertise and knowledge in this area. Both children and teachers enjoyed gaining new skills and techniques.
